"An AES Student Membership Talk on Career in Audio" report by : Mr. Cedric Tio, Secretary Term 2002 / 2003 A membership recruitment talk was held at the Nanyang Technological University on 23rd September 2002 at 7p.m. The talk started with a 15-minute video presentation produced by AES HQ on careers in audio. This informative video gave the 6 students a good idea of the scope of jobs are available in the audio industry worldwide. There were interviews with numerous prominent audio professionals who gave their views on working in the audio industry. This was followed by a membership talk conducted by Dr. Roland K. C. Tan. Dr. Tan first explained the aim of the AES and its significance in the audio industry. He stressed that AES has a balanced mixed of academics, audio engineers and musicians. One can meet people from all sectors of the audio industry in Singapore at AES meetings and seminars. Most importantly, it is a society for people who all share a passion for audio. He continued with a brief history of the AES and its activities over the years. The next part of the meeting was opened to the AES members to share with the students their personal experience with the AES. Ex-Student member, Cedric Tio talked about how AES has shaped and helped him in his career; Jibby Jacob touched on the importance of having friends in the industry whom he can call and consult on anything related to audio; Dr. Tan talked about how the AES committee is an avenue for anyone to hone his or her leadership and management skills; current chairman, Kenn Delbridge told the students how AES can put them on less than “six degree of separation” with anyone in the audio industry. The meeting ended with a well-received question and answer session.
