The
AES Singapore Section jumped at the chance to jointly organize a seminar
with the Singapore Institute of Management featuring a speaker who
is also one of the Singapore section's enduring friends, Professor
Malcolm Hawksford. Professor Hawksford was instrumental in
encouraging two Singaporean AES Student Members (then under the British
AES section)
to form a local
section in 1994. The first
Chairman of the AES Singapore Section, Mr.
Stephen Low,
suggested that the AES take advantage of Professor Hawksford's
visit to Singapore as an external examiner for SIM to speak
on his current research, and things came together
very
quickly and smoothly for the seminar on the evening of November 18.
35 AES members and
guests enjoyed light refreshments and finger foods from SIM's regular
caterer before Professor Hawksford started his presentation in the
airy lecture hall LT4.04. With his thorough insight and witty style,
it hardly seemed possible that Professor Hawksford had spoken non-stop
for almost
90-minutes,
covering
the technical possibilities and on-going research for the two main
high-resolution formats, SACD and DVD-Audio.
A lively
Q&A session followed the presentation, in which Professor Hawksford
touched on topics as varied as the current state of popular music
through to the stunning releases being produced in the two formats.
Even after the seminar,
Q&A session and speaker appreciation award presentation by Stephen
Low, many of the attendees stayed on to speak
with Professor Hawksford, who duly obliged until after 10pm.
The AES Singapore
Section would like to thank Professor Hawksford for generously giving
up his evening to speak to our members and guests, and to Stephen Low
and SIM for their assistance in making this joint seminar possible.
