by: Dr. Roland K C Tan
Secretary (Term
1995/96)
On Wednesday, May, 3rd 1995,
about 20 members and guests attended an interesting half-hour
public lecture by Mr. Subir K Pramanik on "Impact
of Audio Engineering on Multimedia Applications" at Ngee Ann
Polytechnic,
Electrical Engineering Department. Members had a chance to meet Mr.
Pramanik who is also vice-president of AES International Region for the
first time. He is currently with Bang & Olufsen (B&O) in
Denmark.
Mr. Pramanik began his
presentation with a short history on the early computing, photography, film,
and audio recording technologies available since 500 BC when we first
had
the Abacus, through to the latest technologies available. He mentioned
how audio engineering has evolved since 1877 when Edison invented
the
talking
machine, to those found in multimedia system recently such as CD-ROM
recording media, MPEG-1 compressed sound, and even MPEG-II multi-channel
compressed sound in the near future. These were followed by a lively
Q&A session before breaking up for an informal Section
Meeting.
During the meeting, Dr. Roland
Tan, Section secretary, briefed members on the latest development
on the formation of Singapore Section since last August, and mentioned
that two
section committee meetings had been conducted since last year. The
meetings discussed issues regarding application to the Registry Of
Society (ROS), Singapore for the formation of the Singapore Section as well
as drafting of the Section Constitution. At the AES Convention
in Paris last
February, the Board of Governors approved the
formation of the AES Singapore Section.
To date, Singapore has a total
of 24 AES members, an increase of 4 members since
the
last recruitment talk in August 1994. This has been especially encouraging
for a small nation! |
