The AES Singapore Section was honoured to have Mr. Neville Thiele present a seminar on passive crossover systems. Mr. Thiele is an authority in speaker design and holds many patents in the field. He is also the Vice President of International Region of the AES. The seminar was attended by a group of 20 AES members and guests.

Here is an abstract of Mr. Thiele’s presentation taken from his paper: “A crossover system for a two way loudspeaker system is described, in which the parameters of the high-pass filter take account of the parameters of the associated closed-back tweeter, to realize a desired fourth-order high pass filtered acoustic output. When that output is combined with that of the second-order high pass filtered woofer, the summed response is flat. With no impedance correction required, the system produces an inexpensive but precise crossover.”

Mr. Thiele talked about 2nd/4th system as well as 3rd/5th order two-way speaker crossover systems. In his opinion, most of the two-way speaker systems on the market have crossover frequencies that are too high, resulting in the woofer being overloaded. He recommended a cutoff frequency of about 1500Hz for a reasonably sized 2-way system.

A lively Q&A followed Thiele’s insightful presentation. Some of the questions ask were: What are the consumers paying for in a $20,000 speaker system? His candid response was he had seen many speaker systems in which the price has nothing to do with their sonic performances. Some others questions asked were: What are small parameters? Are transient parameters considered in speaker design? Is peak music power output (PMPO) significant? It was a very lively discussion with a constant stream of questions.

The seminar lasted well over 2 hours. It was a great opportunity for our members to learn more about speaker crossover design from the guru himself.
