About 30 members and guests of the AES attended the very interesting
talk given by Professor Kees Immnink, entitled Any Song, Any
Time Any Where.
Professor Kees began the talk with some historical background of Pulse Code
Modulation which was the fore-runner of digitisation of virtually everyday
things and phonomenon,
from entertainment to telecommunication and archiving.
He acknowledged the inventors and scientists that facilitates his invention
of coding technologies which revolutionise or transforms our life drastically
in
the end of the 20th centrury which started with the CD ( Compact Disc) which
was a joint project of Philips and Sony of Japan.
He gave a detail Digital Development in chronological order since that day
and mentioned that there is no houshold or office in the modern world that
is not
using or benefiting from this development.
How digital revolution has transform or created the new paradigm shift in certain
industries from media like celluloid films, magnetic tapes , book publishing
and printing , etc that may converge in some time in the near future, to provide
efficiency, convenience and portability that give rise to the topic of his
very interesting Talk.
The questions and answers were more interesting as some requested him to
see through the crystal ball to forecast or "predict" the future
trends or events that could evolve.
The Talk ended around 9.45pm and many people stayed back to ask more questions
as the talk was very endearing and futuristic.
Extract of the talk is available here.

A. Schouhamer Immink received the prestigious Progress Medal
from The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE).
An AES fellow and Gold Medal Award recipient, Immink received
the award for the central role he played in research and development
of audio and video recording products.
Immink's inventions
have contributed to many aspects of recording systems, most notably
coding technology. He developed the coding technology of a wide
variety of digital video and audio recorders such as the Compact
Disc, Compact Disc Video, CD-R, MiniDisc, DAT, DCC, DVD, and
recently
the BluRay disc system. Immink's research has thus far resulted in four books,
more than 100 articles and more than 1000 international patents. Most of these
are basic patents underlying all modern digital recorder products introduced
since the early 1980s. Knighted by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Immink
has received an " Emmy," the SMPTE Poniatoff Gold Medal, the IEEE
Masaru Ibuka Consumer Electronics Award, and the IEEE Edison Medal, among others.
He was inducted into the Consumer Electronics Hall of Fame and elected into
the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences. He has also been honored with fellow
status in many professional organizations, including SMPTE and IEEE.
Immink, a native
of Rotterdam, The Netherlands, obtained his master's and Ph.D.
degrees from the Eindhoven University of Technology. He is president
and founder of Turing Machines Inc. He is also a guest professor
at the Institute for Experimental Mathematics, Essen-Duisburg
University, Germany, and at the National University of Singapore.
Immink is an AES past president.
