About the AES
The Audio Engineering Society, now in its fifth decade, is
the only professional society devoted exclusively to audio technology. Its
membership of leading engineers, scientists and other authorities has
increased dramatically throughout the world, greatly boosting the society's
stature and that of its members in a truly symbiotic relationship.
The AES serves its members, the industry and the public by
stimulating and facilitating advances in the constantly changing field of
audio. It encourages and disseminates new developments through annual
technical meetings and exhibitions of professional equipment, and through
the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society, the professional archival
publication in the audio industry.
AES Singapore Section
The AES Singapore Section
is in the International Region of AES Sections worldwide that includes
Adelaide, Brisbane, Hong
Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Melbourne, Philippines, Singapore & Sydney.
The Singapore Section held its first meeting in 1994 and was officially recognized
by the Registry of Societies (ROS) in Singapore in
1995.
In April 1993, two Student Members of the AES British Section
took a suggestion from their research supervisor, Professor Malcolm O. Hawksford,
a Fellow Member of the AES and a Director of the Centre for Audio Research & Engineering,
to form a Singapore Section. In 1994,
with 20 members residing in Singapore, the first meeting was called. The
1st
AGM was held in a Staff Conference Room in Block 83 at the Department of
Electrical Engineering at Ngee Ann Polytechnic on
August 8 1994, where Stephen Low, one of
the two students of the AES British Section now back in Singapore, was a
staff member. The main purpose of
the
first meeting was to form the pro-term committee before submitting the
application forms for approval from the AES Head Office in New York, USA,
and the ROS. As well as other documents, they also prepared the
Section Constitution.
The AES Board of Governors
approved the request to form a new section at a meeting
held
during the
98th
AES Convention
in Paris,
France, in February 1995. The new
section received the final approval letter from the ROS dated 11th
December 1995. Under the guidelines of the
Section Constitution approved by the AES Head Office and the ROS, the section
was formed with 8 elected members as the Section Officers of the new committee.
At the age of 38, Stephen Low became the first
Chairman of the Singapore Section.
The Singapore Section
organized its first public seminar, "The Impact of Audio Engineering on Multimedia Applications" at
Ngee Ann Polytechnic on Wednesday, 3rd
May 1995. The section continues to grow from strength to
strength and will celebrate its 11th AGM in June 2005.
