AES at Broadcast Asia 2004
June 15-18, 2004

AES Singapore Section participated at Broadcast Asia 2004, held in Singapore from June 15th till 18th, by jointly organizing the full-day Audio Technology Seminar, under the topic SURROUND SOUND HITS THE AIRWAWES on June 17. The Section also ran a booth at the four-day show as part of its publicity and membership drive. The membership drive is targeted at visitors from Singapore and ASEAN countries as this show also draws visitors from the neighboring countries.

The full day seminar on June 17th will be reported separately with photographs and greater details of the various talks from illustrious speakers.

Secretary Kenn Delbridge and chairman Arthur Ngiam drew up a roster for Section members to man the booth for the full duration of the show, with two members manning the booth in four-hours shifts; two members were required to allow for toilet breaks and cope up with the occasional large flows of visitors. In all, over 16 members kindly volunteered their time for the four full days. There were times during the first two days when Singapore AES members visiting the AES booth were drawn in to help to cope with the large curious and enthusiastic crowd. The AES committee appreciates the members’ sacrifice for the section’s membership and publicity drive.

Our booth was beside the APB (Asia Pacific Broadcasting) booth and attracted numerous visitors from the region. The organizer provided the AES Singapore Section with a complimentary booth at an ideal location, visible upon entry and only 70 meters away from the main entrance of Hall 1 of the Singapore Expo Centre at Changi.

Many prospective members were told to go online to apply for membership, especially overseas visitors from Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Brunei; we also had visitors from India and Pakistan. However, they were a few ‘hardcore’ visitors to the AES booth who insisted on applying for membership with us on the spot by paying the fees and submitting their duly filled application form.

Our vocal slogan at the Broadcast show for the four days was:
FOR LIFELONG SOUND INVESTMENT--------- JOIN AES!!

This provocative slogan invited many questions, debates, even skeptics, that all made the booth bustle with activity and enthusiasm. The booth also became a meeting point for many overseas AES members from Australia, Europe and United States who participated either as exhibitors or visitors to the show. There they were about to share information about various AES sections activities and catch up with friends and common friends in the Audio fraternity. The whole history of Singapore Section with detail reports of every event or activity from the day of First AGM up till the ATS seminar (June 17th 2004) at Broadcast Asia were available for viewing from a CD-R burned by our webmaster.

The members who volunteered and kindly donated their time for manning the booth also enjoyed themselves in meeting and explaining about AES to visitors to the show. From the visitors and members’ points of view, it was a fruitful and enjoyable participation.
