The
Audio Technology Seminar on Surround Sound in Broadcast was
held on 17 June 2004 at the Singapore Expo jointly with Singapore
Exhibition Services who organized the Broadcast Asia 2004 which
was simultaneously held at the Singapore Expo.
The
ATS Seminar room , with the usual rostrum was also set up
with the full
range of equipment and speakers to perform as a demonstration
room for the effects of surround sound. Gratitude must be
given to TEAM 108 for their loan of Genelec
Speakers, YAMAHA for
the
DCM 2000Mixer and STUDER ASIA for the Tascam DA
98HR. The
full detailed schedule of the Seminar of the speakers and
their topics is found on the attached Programe Schedule
together with
a synopsis of the speakers and the topics of their presentation.
The
keynote speaker, Mr. Mick Sawaguchi, Director
of Program Production Engineering of NHK of Japan gave the
opening
topic immediately
after Chairman Arthur Ngiam’s introductory and
welcome address.Around
50 participants sat throughout the seminar while delegates
from other tracks running
concurrently with
our seminar from
the other halls also joined in when the topics meet
their interest
or area of specialty. The topic by Mick Sawaguchi was
accompanied with visual and real surround sound effects demonstration
that
really awed
and delighted
the audience. Many had wished for a longer demonstration
due to the wonderful and enjoyable listening pleasure
derived from the
sound effects to demonstrate the subject covered. Mike
covered the theories or nuts and bolts of the prerequisites
of Surround
Sound.
Mike
is an authority on this subject and had gave a wonderful
demonstration of the various effects of surround
sound
to substantiate the theories
and fallacies he mentione in his presentation. The
saying that Seeing is Believing should be more appropriate
as Hearing is Believing
for this demonstration by Mike Sawaguchi. For

Each
and every of the speakers delighted and amuse the audience
in their own unique way and due to unforeseen
circumstances,
Mary Ann Siedler was unable to deliver her topic
which was covered by
an equally excellent speaker, Paul Davies from
Dolby Laboratories. Paul gave an excellent talk in spite
of
the last minute
notice and he appeared to be a seasoned speaker
on the topic. John Wigglesworth, a well-known regional broadcast
consultant, shared with the audience on the challenges facing
broadcasters as they welcome a broadcast future that will
inevitably be delivered with surround sound.
The
grand finale was the Panel Discussion , chaired by Arthur
Ngiam, and the panel consisting of
all the Speakers
in the
Seminar as
there was no Q& A immediately after each
presentation. The panelists answered a varied
array of questions
that was overextended
beyond its allocated time slots due to the high
level of a enthusiastism and the growing interest
in SURROUND
SOUND among people in AUDIO
industry.
