4th AGM Report
Friday, 26 June 1998

reported by: Jibby Jacob Secretary (Term 1997/98)

A night to remember...

It was a sultry night on Friday 26 June 1998 at 7 pm. Twenty five members and 25 guests gathered at the Amara Hotel Ballroom 2, Tanjong Pagar, Singapore for the 4th AGM cum annual buffet dinner of the AES Singapore Section.

Attendees in rapt attention to the membership talk by outgoing secretary, Jibby Jacob.

All AES members were informed of the 4th AGM and nomination forms for office bearers for term 98/99 were distributed a month earlier through the Section's Newsletter. They were also invited through the Section's Homepage. However, those who attended RSVP'ed through the email and by phone. Members who began arriving from 7 pm were invited to tuck into the 9-course sumptuous buffet dinner. For the record, the menu included shrimp cocktail, marinated octopus, mutton rendang, sweet & sour fish, sliced beef with pepper, sautéed broccoli, crispy roast chicken, steamed rice & noodles. The choices of desserts included mango pudding, caramel custard, chocolate truffle cake & a fruit platter. Sharing gourmet food, it was a chance for many old friends in the local audio industry to meet & renew their acquaintances.

At 8 pm when all the guests had their fill, the serious business of the night began. This started with the membership talk by the outgoing Secretary, Jibby Jacob who spoke on the AES, its origin and mission. He touched briefly on the administrative structure and working groups. For the benefit of the guests, Jacob highlighted the many advantages of being a member of the AES and the added benefits of being a sustaining member.

AES Singapore section members and guests at the 4th AGM held at Amara Hotel. - Friday 26 June 98.

This was followed by the opening address and section report for term 1997/1998 by the Chairman, Dr Roland Tan. In a round up of activities for the term, Tan mentioned there were 5 seminars, 3 workshops cum studio tours, 1 lecture & a forum organised by the Committee. Including the AGM and 5 Committee meetings, there were a total of 16 local meetings in the term 97/98.

He then thanked the outgoing Committee for their wholehearted support in organising the activities in the last term. He went on to include facts and figures on the growth in the local section over the past 2 consecutive terms during which he had guided the section in his capacity as Chairman. Of particular interest, was that growth of the Singapore section, was untouched by the economic crisis surrounding the region, and had grown to its present quota of 64 active members.

The outgoing Treasurer, Mr Christopher Yap, in his inimitable way presented the audited financial report for term 97/98. In the final profit and expenditure statement, he painted a picture of the healthy position the section accounts were in. Yap claimed that the credit goes to the outgoing Committee who managed this by their frugal spending in the section activities.

This was followed by the presentation of the nominees for the Committee of the term 98/99 by Mr Albert Mah who stood in for Mr Ng Hon Cheong, the Nominations Committee who could not be present due to unforeseen circumstances. Mr Albert Mah, the Returning Officer, then went on to include the nomination of the Honorary Auditors for term 98/99.

Finally the dissolution of the 97/98 Committee was declared by Mah on the condition that the outgoing Committee will continue it's role till PALA 98 exhibition & convention after which the incumbent Committee (term 98/99) will take over. This was mandated so that the outgoing Committee can continue to fulfill its obligations in the organisation of the AES seminar planned on the 17th July 98 in conjunction with PALA 98. In the election of the Section Officers for the new term all the nominated candidates were returned unopposed. Thus no lengthy deliberation was involved to the great relief of the audience.

The results of the election and the new office bearers for term 1998/1999 are as follows:

 Post                                     Elected                              Proposer
CHAIRMAN                          Jibby Jacob                         Dr Roland K C Tan
SECRETARY                       Christopher Yap                   Dr Roland K C Tan
TREASURER                       Michael Teh                         Dr Roland K C Tan
COMMITTEE MEMBER 1      Stephen Low                       Dr Roland K C Tan
COMMITTEE MEMBER 2      Eric Wong                           Dr Roland K C Tan
COMMITTEE MEMBER 3      Robert Soo                          Mr Michael Teh
HONORARY AUDITOR 1       Arthur Ngiam                       Dr Roland K C Tan
HONORARY AUDITOR 2       Ronald Goh                         Mr Jibby Jacob

In his speech of acceptance, the newly elected Chairman, Jibby Jacob thanked the members for their confidence in accepting him to lead the section into the new term. In this address, Jacob also stated for the record, the excellent leadership provided by his predecessor, Dr Roland Tan, who had contributed much to increase the visibility and the prestige of the Singapore Section especially through the bi-monthly newsletter which he edited single handedly.

The reward was of course the general increase in membership locally. Jacob requested for the same support from the Section and the new Committee members, many of whom he had worked with previously. The challenge in the new term, he claimed, was to maintain the same high standards set by the previous Chairman.

This was followed by memento presentation to all the outgoing office bearers in recognition of their contributions to the AES Singapore Section by the outgoing Chairman. A nice touch to the event was when Dr Roland Tan himself received a memento from the senior most Singapore section member present, Mr. Ronald Goh who has been an AES member for the past 25 years.

The memorable meeting ended at 10 pm but everyone stayed back to take photographs for the archives. Thanks are also due to the Webmaster Gerd Meier who setup a portable PC loaded with the Singapore Section WebPages for guests and members to surf.

....Yes, indeed it was a night to remember.
