1st AGM Report
Monday, 8 August 1994

reported by: Dr. Roland K C Tan Secretary (Term 1994/95)

The first AGM on the Audio Engineering Society (AES) Singapore Section was held at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Electrical Engineering Department, Singapore on 8 August 1994, Monday at 7.30 pm local time. It was organised by the pro-temp chairman and secretary, Mr. Stephen Low and Dr. Roland Tan respectively, both AES members since student days in the UK. There were an encouraging number of 15 participants for the event including other AES members residing in Singapore as well as invited guests.

An opening address was given by Stephen Low where he first introduced the aims and reasons behind the formation of a local section, stressing the importance of promoting audio education in Singapore. The other objective of this meeting was to elect officers for the Executive Committee so that their names could be submitted to the Registry of Society (ROS), Singapore for approval to form the AES Singapore Section officially.

Mr. Tooraj Forughian B.Eng.(Hons), C.Eng., MIEE, currently an expatriate lecturer from Ngee Ann Polytechnic, was duly appointed the Returning Officer for the Nominations Committee. Tooraj had done an excellent job ensuring that the election was conducted according to the Section Bylaws. Altogether 5 members were elected; Stephen Low is chairman; Roland Tan, secretary; Mark Lim, treasurer; and Richt Teo, Jibby Jacob & Eric Wong are the committee members.

The participants were extremely delighted and excited to see the formation of a local section finally happening after all these years. Especially Mr. Arthur Ngiam, an AES member for more than 20 years, voicing his fullest support and encouragements for more new members within the society. Stephen Low, the elected first chairman of the new AES Singapore Section then rounded up the meeting by revealing his plans for future activities. The enthusiasms of the participants could still be felt even after the meeting was declared closed at 8.30 pm after a photo-taking session.

A number of non-members present had shown very keen interest, enquiring about membership applications and requesting for the application forms. The whole congregation was broken up into many smaller groups, exchanging greetings with each other and having informal discussions; while some had just met each other for the very first time, others have been acquaintances for many years. Experiences were shared with the younger members by some older members who have been in the audio industries for a good 30 years or more! These went on well late into the evening until the last member left the room shortly after 10 pm.
